The Overlay Top

It’s been awhile since I’ve thought about writing a blog post, but I’ve jumped into the sewing world and pattern testing again, so here we go!

This is the new pattern from Designs by Call Ajaire for One Thimble’s upcoming issue #OT26 (you can preorder now). It’s the Overlay Top and Dress pattern, available in sizes newborn through 16, and it includes a top and dress with or without the overlay option. It’s sleeveless, has a flutter sleeve option, and includes an adorable keyhole tie in the back, and yes I completely overlooked taking a picture of it! The facing inside makes this a quick sew, no fussing with bias tape.

My girl is a size 6 lengthened to 8 (she’s 9 years old, definitely go by measurements and not age), and she absolutely loves this top! She had selected this cheerful yellow linen last year, and I still hadn’t made her anything with it, but when I saw One Thimble’s color theme for their issue included yellow, it was pretty obvious even to me what I had to do, haha!

I also made one for her in a rayon challis I had in my stash. If you make the top without the overlay, it uses very little fabric and is such a wonderful way to use scraps from my own makes.

She likes that this top is a top and not a tunic. I also think the length is on trend and absolutely adorable on her. Her preferences for tops are typically a t-shirt, so it’s fun seeing her choosing to wear something that deviates from that. I’m not going to lie, it’s satisfying to sew something for her that she wants to wear. She has dressed herself in these tops a handful of times already since I’ve made them, and that makes this mama feel good.

If you want to see more pics of this pattern in the other options, or the other issue’s patterns sewn by other makers, hop on over to One Thimble’s FB group. There you’ll find the links to preorder and get a discount too. If you don’t really want to buy the whole e-zine, just wait about a month and it’ll end up in Designs by Call Ajaire’s pattern shop.

On a more personal note, I’ve pulled my kids out of school, and we’re totally homeschooling now! How liberating this experience has been, and now I actually have time to sew. You may end up seeing more frequent posting here 🙂
