After seeing the Penny Playsuit, another free pattern from Shwin&Shwin, I knew I’d have to make one for my little Penny!
Really, I don’t make her enough things. Especially since she seems to enjoy them so much!
It’s a combination of woven and knit fabrics which I love, and it looks comfy. My only hesitation was that the only way to take this off for diaper changes is to unzip the back and take the entire playsuit off. Of course I could add snaps along the inside of the legs, but I also dislike those. I decided to not care about this because IT’S SO FREAKING CUTE!!!!
The woven fabric was a fat quarter I picked up about a month ago. I just love the colors, and if I had more, I probably would’ve made myself something with it. The ric rac is vintage, and I’m really trying to use up my stash. I have soooo much of it. I like the separation between the fabrics. The knit is pretty heavy and soft, something I just picked up at my local fabric store.
The zipper matches the ovals in the fabric perfectly, and I actually already had it in my stash. Originally, I had vintage piping that matched the zipper, but I had already attached the knit fabric to the front before I realized I’d left out the piping! I hate seam ripping with a passion, hence the ric rac.
When top stitching the zipper, I used darker thread for the knit fabric and white thread for the woven. I also used white thread when sewing up the seams for the knit, evidenced by the white peaking out under the zipper.
I thought it would look too busy with ric rac all the way around. I have this weird thing with ric rac. I like it, but I also think it’s easy to overdo it. Is there such thing as minimalist ric rac? I think that’s an oxymoron.
Anyway, she loves this playsuit almost as much as I do. I can’t tell you how adorable she was running around in it!
I’ve now put aside sewing for myself at the moment because I must make her another one before she won’t fit them anymore!
